Those words were delivered in as kind and compassionate a manner as humanly possible from our developmental pediatrician, mere weeks after our young son Justin's regular physician had referred us to her. That phrase, with its succinct lifetime sentence, devastated me with its implications. It also afforded me the gift of relief that I could finally put a name to what had been haunting me about my son's development for seventeen months. I knew it was just a matter of time before that unwieldy umbrella term of PDD would be replaced by the mantle of autism, and eventually I was proven correct. My family's life was turned upside down in that moment, in a manner far more profound than the day my husband and I first became parents. As an educator, I knew just how serious this label was. Several spectrum children had been in my classroom over the years, and I had come to know many of their parents well. Some had shared with me a number of the difficult and often heartbreaking situations that encroached on their family's happiness, the daily struggles that often seemed as if they would consume them. I had a sense back then of how incredibly brave and stoic these families were, and a feeling of great relief that at that time I was not in their camp. Now, ironically, I am, and although I had a vague idea of how fully autism would alter the course of my family's existence, how it would infiltrate every conceivable second of our day, I had no idea how to proceed, what area to attack first. I longed for a "How-to" guide.
